LVIV, Jun 27, 01 (CWNews.com) - About 500,000 young Ukrainians gathered in a Lviv city plaza on Tuesday evening for an evening of prayer, singing, and a talk by Pope John Paul II.

The Pope told his young audience that their lives should conform to the teachings of Christ, because as St. Peter said to Jesus, "You have the words of eternal life." He urged them to recognize the Ten Commandment as "the fundamental law of humanity, written within every conscience."

The young crowd sat through a steady rain for hours, and continued to sing long into the night-- long after the Pope took his leave. At one point John Paul left the stage to change his clothes, which were thoroughly soaked. When he returned, he sang a Polish song about rain-- to lusty applause from his audience, which included a large number of youngsters from across the nearby Polish border.
